SERGI BELBEL

SERGI BELBEL (Terrassa, Barcelona, 1963). Playwright, director and theatre translator. He holds a degree in Romance Languages and Literature from the UAB (1986). Professor of Playwriting at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona from 1988 to 2006. Art director at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya from 2006 to 2013.
He has written around twenty plays, among which the following stand out: Elsa Schneider (1989), Fourplay (1990), Caresses (1991), After the rain (1993), Morir (1994), Blood (1998), El temps de Planck (2000), Strangers (2004), Mobile (2005), In Tuscany (2007), Offside (2010), Les roses de la vida (2017) and Si no t’hagués conegut (2018). Many of them have been staged in several European and American countries. The French version of After the Rain (Après la pluie) premiered at the Comédie Française in October 2017.
He has directed plays by Shakespeare, Calderón, Molière, Racine, Marivaux, Goldoni, J.B. Priestley, Beckett, Perec, Koltès, Mamet, De Filippo, Benet i Jornet, Jordi Galcerán, Clàudia Cedó and Antonio Tabares, among others. Three of his plays (Caresses, Morir and Strangers) have been adapted for the screen by Ventura Pons, while Agustí Villaronga adapted After the Rain for a telemovie. He has written screenplays (Eva by Kike Maillo and Stella Candente and Love Me Not by Lluís Miñarro) and TV scripts for the Catalan TV channel TV3: (Secrets de família, Nissaga: l’herència) and Spanish A3 (Sin identidad). In 2018 he created the TV series Si no te hubiera conocido for TV3, DiagonalTV and Netflix.
He has received, among others, the following awards: Marqués de Bradomín Prize (1985), National Prize for Playwriting, Generalitat de Catalunya (1993); National Prize for Playwrighting of the Spanish Ministry of Culture (1994); Molière award for Best Comedy (After the Rain) (1999); National Theatre Prize, Generalitat de Catalunya (2000); Max Performing Arts Award for International Promotion (2002); and City of Barcelona Performing Arts Award (2003), as well as several Butaca Prizes.
